Game Of Thrones’ Brian Kirk In Talks To Direct Thor Sequel

Brian Kirk may be forsaking Westeros for Asgard, as Variety reports the Game of Thrones director is in early talks to helm Thor 2 for Disney and Marvel.

The sequel would mark the first major Hollywood film for Kirk, who directed three episodes of HBO’s Emmy-nominated fantasy epic, “The Wolf and the Lion,” “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things” and “Lord Snow.” His resume also includes episodes of Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Luther and The Tudors.

According to the trade paper, Kirk rose to the top of Marvel’s list of candidates to succeed Kenneth Branagh “after he showed his abilities to juggle large ensembles of thesps and complex storylines in his TV projects, while also grounding the fantasy genre via his work on Thrones.” He reportedly edged out such contenders as Breck Eisner (The Crazies), Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin) and Noam Murro (300: Battle of Artemesia).

Thor, which opened in May, has grossed $447 million worldwide. Don Payne, who co-wrote the first film as well as Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, is tackling the screenplay for the sequel, set to open on July 26, 2013. Chris Hemsworth will, of course, reprise his starring role as the god of thunder in the sequel, which Variety contends “is expected to feature a large cast of Asgardians and creatures in the Norse mythology-set world.”
