The Game Awards provided plenty of first-looks at brand new titles in development. There was certainly a pattern of older games coming back from the dead, though there were also a solid amount of new games announced as well. In total, 18 games were announced during The Game Awards. Here are just five promising ones that gamers will want to keep an eye on in the coming months and years.

Ark II

The Vin Diesel-focused trailer for Studio Wildcard's action-survival game Ark certainly took plenty of people by surprise. Not only was Ark first released as an early access title in 2015, but the original wasn't exactly a heavily acclaimed game, receiving mixed reviews from critics. The fact that Studio Wildcard was able to bring Vin Diesel into the project to star as the main character and commissioned an animated Ark series to go along with it is certainly an interesting path for Ark II to take.

Not much is known about Ark II outside of the game's casting. The trailer seems to highlight a new enemy type highlighted, as well as a possible focus on other human NPCs. Ark II might also be more story-focused, since the trailer spent a lot of time with Diesel's character, Santiago, and a young girl.  Ark II seems to be an ambitious step forward for Studio Wildcard, and it is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

A New Mass Effect

Last night was huge for fans of the Mass Effect series. Granted, not much was shown in this announcement trailer outside of the promise that Mass Effect will continue, but that was enough to restore hype for fans of the series. After the long-awaited reveal of the Mass Effect Legendary Editionthis is certainly an exciting time to be a Mass Effect fan.

Perfect Dark

Rare's Perfect Dark series is one of its underrated works. Given that it's been 10 years since the last Perfect Dark game, this announcement was exciting to see. Development team The Initiative teased a new Perfect Dark project earlier this year, but this was the first time it was officially confirmed.

The original N64 Perfect Dark was seen as a spiritual successor to Rare's GoldenEye 007. Its gameplay was similar to that of GoldenEye, with players assuming the role of Agent Dark in her attempts to uncover an extraterrestrial conspiracy. Given its roots, this new Perfect Dark could help reinvigorate the series.

Ghost 'n Goblins Resurrection

This reveal was certainly a huge shock for Capcom fans. In an era where Capcom seems to only want to focus on games like Street Fighter and Devil May Cry, seeing a trailer for a remaster of Ghost 'n Goblins is a breath of fresh air. Not only is it one of Capcom's older IPs, but it's also not a fighting game.

The game's new art style seems like a faithful reimagining of the original. This is a huge move for Capcom, since the company isn't exactly known for reviving old franchises. This could represent the start of something new for Capcom, so gamers will want to watch this one if only for that reason.

Road 96

Road 96 is an incredibly intriguing and unique game coming from developers Digixart. It seems to be a "road-trip" game in a similar vein to titles like My Summer Car and Jalopy, with its Steam page advertising a story-driven experience that's about the people the player meets and the places they see on their road trip. The game's story seems to focus on hitchhiking to cross the border of an authoritarian nation known as Petria, hinting towards a powerful story about survival and resilience.
