"Gambit" Shakeup: Director Rupert Wyatt Leaves Film

"Gambit" is looking to deal in a new director: Deadline reported Thursday afternoon that Rupert Wyatt is leaving 20th Century Fox's upcoming X-Men spinoff film, set to star Channing Tatum in the title role.

Wyatt has issued the following statement, sent to CBR News via 20th Century Fox: "I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film." The film is still scheduled to start production in early 2016, with a new director expected to be on board soon.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an escalating budget due to script issues also contributed to Wyatt's exit.

Wyatt has directed three feature films in his career, 2008's "The Escapist," 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Gambler," released last year and starring Mark Wahlberg. "Gambit" has a scheduled release date of Oct 7, 2016.
