This article contains spoilers for Gambit #1, on sale by Marvel Comics.

By now, many fans of Marvel Comics, especially any X-Men titles, know about Remy LeBau, aka Gambit. Born in the Louisiana bayou, he's a former member of the Thieves' Guild with the skills to steal just about anything, even the heart of his beloved wife, Rogue. He's appeared alongside different teams of X-Men and gave his life for the cause. While Gambit is by far one of the most popular X-Men characters in comic books, any attempts at giving him a successful solo series were cut too short.

Now, writers are taking a different approach this time around with a new solo series for the thief. Gambit #1 (by Chris Claremont, Sid Kotian, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Clayton Cowles) features a story about the Cajun set during a pivotal time in X-Men history that not only highlights his origin, but the origin of another well-loved X-Man. During this time, he took on a young protégé to teach them the ways of a thief. This was none other than Storm, who was then a young pre-teen.

Storm's reversion from the leader of the X-Men back to a child with a spotty memory and no control over her powers is an interesting story in itself. In order to answer that question, readers can consult Uncanny X-Men #248 (by Chris Claremont, Dan Green, and Jim Lee). In this issue, Nanny, an insane cyborg, and Orphan Maker sought to save mutant children by any means necessary. One of these methods was a plan to revert the X-Men mentally back into children using robotic suits. However, this didn't work, and when they tried to escape, Storm chased them and was captured.

The two placed her in a machine that turned her back into a child. She was unable to fully remember who she was. After being found at a hospital, an evil psychic being known as the Shadow King came from another dimension and sought to take advantage of her predicament. He wanted to subdue Ororo for his own needs but luckily she escaped and began a new life as a runaway.

Unfortunately, it would not be long before she fell into a trap made by the Shadow King and was nearly taken to be a part of his army of Hounds. However, she met Gambit in Uncanny X-Men #266 (by Chris Claremont, Joe Rubinstein, and Michael Collins). After the two escaped, they set off on a journey across the Southern part of the United States.

This is around the time when the story in Gambit #1 takes place. It recalls the time Remy and Storm spent together, taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Once a thief herself back in Cairo, she already had a leg up in the ways of thievery, however, there was much she stood to learn from someone as skilled as Gambit.

Perhaps this solo series will stand to succeed on its own. Not only will fans get to see Gambit before he joined the X-Men, but they'll also get to watch Ororo grow from the experiences she had as a child and into the weather goddess many fans have come to love. Gambit is a very supportive and understanding figure for Storm to look up to, and his realistic look on life reminds her of what the world is really like. The two make an amazing team, and it'll be amazing to watch this story unfold. It's something fans have yet to see in X-Men lore, and it's a step in the right direction when it comes to telling a new story about Gambit.

Future issues could see the two take on The Shadow King and his Hounds. The Shadow King is a formidable foe, not only to Ororo, but to everyone he meets. There could be appearances from the X-Men themselves, as the Shadow King did vow to seek revenge on Storm by first taking out her beloved team. At least fans will get to watch Gambit, not only take on some tough enemies, but also take on a moody child.
