Reader Michael H. wrote in to ask:
Way back when in Cable/Deadpool when Gambit was “evil” and part of the Marauders again it is hinted at that Gambit might not have been Gambit or at least that he was being controlled, Cable says something along the lines that he (Gambit) is stressing his accent too much.
This was before Secret Invasion, but could it have been possible that Gambit was a skrull? Was Fabian Nicieza hinting towards this future x-over or something else entirely?
Michael’s talking about the time that Gambit returned to the X-Men titles after being gone for a while (after deciding to become one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen for some reason), only now he was working with the Marauders and helped to KILL Cable in X-Men #200!
That Chris Bachalo splash page…dang, that was nice.
Anyhow, it was quickly revealed that Gambit only joined Mystique and Sinister’s team (which were trying to recover Destiny’s diaries) because he felt that that was the only way that he could protect Rogue from them…
It was still a dick move.
Anyhow, in Cable/Deadpool #42, Fabian Nicieza wrote the “death” of Cable from Cable’s perspective and in the issue, he threw in the following bit…
As you saw from the question, Michael believed that this was a hint that something was wrong with Gambit. I checked with Fabian Nicieza, though, and he let me know that he was simply taking a shot at how other writers tended to over-do it with Gambit’s accent and how he didn’t like that, so he was just making fun of that (as he noted, “I always hated the exaggerated use of dose and dems that other writers did”).
So there ya go, Michael, no hint of any Skrull-dom!
