The Disney+ series What If...? has started introducing Marvel Cinematic Universe viewers to the alternate versions of characters from around the Multiverse, carrying on a decades-old tradition in comics. And even in the world of the fantastic, some stories take things far past the point of being remotely believable. In the case of Aunt May, that line gets crossed somewhere between becoming a Herald of Galactus and sating the Devourer of World's hunger with the power of celestial snack cakes.

For as long as she has been part of it, Aunt May has been one of the kindest souls in the entire Marvel Universe, and that hasn't gone unnoticed by the heroes who populate it alongside her. In fact, her good nature was so well known that the Fantastic Four even let her babysit the young Franklin Richards when they were needed on the West Coast during 1984's Marvel Team-Up #137 by Michael Carlin and Greg LaRocque. While May and Franklin were enjoying a day at the circus with Peter and Mary Jane, Galactus was having a much worse time of things following the death of his herald Nova. In need of a replacement, Galactus sought out the Fantastic Four to ask Reed Richards for help. But when the Devourer of Worlds doesn't find Reed at home, he instead turns his attention to Franklin, choosing the boy to be his next herald. Thanks to his own powers, Franklin narrowly avoided this fate -- though he might have wished he hadn't once he realized that the Power Cosmic which was meant for him had instead found Aunt May, and in that moment, the Golden Oldie was born.

Imbued with immense cosmic power, May was also filled with the overwhelming urge to serve her new master in sating his hunger. Franklin, hoping to help as well, offered Galactus one of his Twinkle snack cakes. Surprisingly, something about the processed treat struck a chord within the Devourer of Worlds, and so he enlisted the Golden Oldie's help in hunting down as many Twinkles as they could.

With the Power Cosmic on her side, this proved to be every last Twinkle on Earth, yet this was still not enough for Galactus. In the interest of saving every life she could, Golden Oldie searched the cosmos for any uninhabited planet that could hold Galactus over for the time being, and in the process, she stumbled upon a planet that just so happened to be a massive Twinkle in its entirety.

Before she could get too close, Aunt May was fired upon by another cosmic powerhouse in the form of Dough Boy the Creator. Much like his name would imply, Dough Boy isn't far removed from the iconic Pillsbury mascot apart from his defensive disposition regarding his celestial creations. As it turns out, Dough Boy was banished by his own kind for heresy after they discovered his massive baked goods were being made as an offering to Galactus instead of as inhabitable worlds for their kind. When Galactus finally arrived to see what the Golden Oldie had found, she convinced him to take Dough Boy as his new herald, and in doing so ensured that the Devourer of Worlds would never have to live up to his title ever again.

Things wrapped up relatively neatly when, upon Aunt May's return to Earth, the Power Cosmic was absorbed by Franklin Richards. Like so many other alternate universe stories, the tale of the Golden Oldie never left any sort of lasting impression on the wider Marvel Universe, which is probably for the best. Skirting the line between self-satire and unhinged lunacy, Marvel Team-Up #137 is one of Marvel's most memorable tales., to say the least.
