Wonder Woman 1984 star Gal Gadot recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself and co-star Kristen Wiig, who played Wonder Woman's archenemy Cheetah in the film.
Posted to Gadot's personal Instagram account, the photo sees Gadot in Wonder Woman's golden armor from the film and Wiig in Cheetah makeup sitting down on the set during filming of their characters' final battle, making goofy faces at the camera. "Just a couple of cool cats taking a break," Gadot stated in the description.
Wonder Woman 1984 was released both in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 25, 2020. Director and co-writer Patty Jenkins spoke about the hybrid release strategy earlier this year, saying, "It was the best choice in a bunch of bad choices at the moment." Jenkins further stated that the decision was a "heartbreaking experience" and "detrimental to the movie."
Prior to this, Jenkins had stated that she hoped 1984 would get eventually get a theatrical release. "The theaters literally asked us to do it," she explained. "They said, 'We're going to shut our doors if nobody comes in.' So what are you going to do? I am filled with sadness that it didn't get a real theatrical run. I hope one day it does. It completely changes how people see it, but what are you going to do? It happened."
In addition, Queen Hippolyta actor Connie Nielsen had weighed in on 1984's lackluster reception, citing the movie's various delays brought about due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason. "I think that what happens psychologically is that a lot of movies like that then get into this insecure territory where they're up for a judgment that would not normally have happened," Nielsen said. "The fact that it was moved so many times, put it under scrutiny that it did not deserve."
As for the upcoming third Wonder Woman movie, during DC FanDome Jenkins teased the return of veteran Wonder Woman actor Lynda Carter, who cameoed in 1984's mid-credits scene as Asteria, with Carter jokingly saying, "Even if I did know [about the film], you'd have to kill me to have me talk about it, but I don't." However, Jenkins had previously announced that she would be leaving the Wonder Woman franchise after Wonder Woman 3.
Wonder Woman 1984 is available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD, as well as digitally. It is also streaming on HBO Max.
