Though Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is being lauded by both critics and movie-goers, comic writer Gail Simone, who had a long run on the Birds of Prey comic series, has one complaint.

"Okay, I want to have a talk about one aspect of the Birds of Prey movie that I was withholding judgment on, that did bug me," Simone said on Twitter. "I think it’s pretty obvious I loved it, but I do have a sizable gripe." The writer went on to explain her history with the characters, in order to put the complaint in context. Though Simone praised actress Ella Jay Basco, who portrays Cain in the film, she said the character is nothing like the comic-version of Cassandra Cain. "I don’t think of it as an insult so much as a missed opportunity," Simone continued.

The writer also mentioned it would have been easy to avoid complaints by giving Basco's character a different name. Simone has frequently praised Birds of Prey in the past, especially Jurnee Smollett-Bell's portrayal of Black Canary/Dinah Lance. Simone has even said that she'd like to write a Black Canary solo film starring Smollett-Bell.

In the comics, Cassandra Cain appears as a mute Asian-American raised by deadly assassins. The character would go on to become the second Batgirl after Barbara Gordon.
