FX has ordered a 13-episode second season of The Strain, the vampire thriller from Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse and Chuck Hogan.

Based on the bestselling horror novels written by del Toro and Hogan, The Strain stars Corey Stall as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, whose team from the Centers for Disease Control is called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team and a group of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity.

The first FX original series to air on Sunday nights, The Strain averages 11 million total viewers each week, including VOD and online.

“We’ve never had any doubts about The Strain,” John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. “Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale.”

Seven episodes remain in the first season, which will be released Dec. 2 on DVD and Blu-ray. Season 2 will premiere in summer 2015.

Also starring David Bradley, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland and Miguel Gomez, The Strain airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
