WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Wonder Woman #1, by Joelle Jones, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

One of the biggest surprises in DC's Future State event is the introduction of a new Wonder Woman who will defend one of the DC Universe's possible futures. Named Yara Flor, this hero was from a recently discovered faction of Amazons hidden within the Brazilian rainforest that remained a secret and detached from the Amazons of Themyscira and the Bana-Mighdall for centuries.

And with Future State now here in full swing, Yara effortlessly lays claim in her first mission as she descends into a very different version of DCU's underworld in Future State: Wonder Woman #1.

Wonder Woman Yara Flor Hydra

Yara is seen in the middle of a wild hunt deep within the Amazon, trying to harvest mythical horns from multi-headed, voracious monsters known as the hydra. Armed with her own golden weapon and a mighty winged pegasus as her faithful mount through the rainforest, Yara easily bests the ravenous behemoths and cuts off the horns with her sword. Confronted by a young demigod known as Caipora, the Brazilian mythological figure that personifies and protects the South American country's forests. Hinting that Yara is the daughter of an important mythological figure herself, Caipora agrees to open a portal to Hades after Yara ensnares her in her lasso, revealed in actuality to be a pair of traditional South American weaponry, the bola.

This new vision of Hades doesn't match the classic, Ancient Greek depiction that Diana Prince encountered in her own adventures to the netherworld. Instead, this incarnation of the afterlife resembles an airport, complete with security checkpoints overseen by Cerberus, the mythological three-headed dog. In Beetlejuice-esque fashion, the souls of the dead are seen forming queues at departure terminals to various afterlife destinations conducted by Charon for the price of several coins, as per Ancient Greek legend. Previously, Diana Prince's Wonder Woman had visited a darkened version of Hades where the Lord of the Underworld was depicted as a small boy with a single, lit candle balanced on his head as he oversaw his domain.

Future State Wonder Woman Underworld

What Hades himself looks like in the Future State timeline is unknown, but the underworld has seen a massive overhaul since Yara has risen to stake her claim to the mantle of Wonder Woman. Having won the Hydra's horns in combat, Yara intends to exchange the mythological harvest to the God of the Dead for one of her fallen Amazon sisters. However, it's not clear if Yara is trying to rescue an established figure like Diana Prince, Donna Troy or Cassie Sandsmark or if she's in the underworld for an Amazon from her own faction. And with Yara unable to properly pay Charon, the new Wonder Woman's adventures in the reimagined underworld may be cut abruptly short.

The new Wonder Woman's adventures are informed by a blend of local Brazilian folklore, as represented by Caipora, with the usual elements of Ancient Greek mythology that have always been cultural hallmarks of the character. And while Yara Flor has quickly proven herself up to the epic challenge that comes with the mantle of Wonder Woman while discovering her own altered vision of the mythical afterlife.

Now trapped in the underworld, facing hordes of the deceased just trying to pass on to their final destination and dealing an awakened Cerberus, Yara faces her first major test as the new Wonder Woman all in the name of rescuing one of her fellow Amazon sisters. And judging by early looks at the subsequent Infinite Frontier era, this will only be the first of many tests for DC's new Wonder Woman.
