DC Comics loves to retcon the pasts of its characters or take them to alternate universes, but the 2021 event "Future State" examines new versions of some of their most famous. In the aptly named event, the comics will travel to the future, beginning in January 2021.

Among the numerous titles part of the "Future State" event are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, DC's superhero trinity. The comics will give DC fans a look at the heroes they know and love, but also new characters to take on their mantles. Not a lot of details have been released about just what each of the characters will be up to, but when it comes to the Future State: Wonder Woman title, fans can figure out quite a bit of what's coming.

10 The Story Is Set After 2025

DC Future State Wonder Woman Batman

"Future State" begins its future set timeline in 2025 according to DC Comics. The timeline spans a ridiculously long amount of time, going until "the end of time."  Though DC released most of when the titles take place in the timeline, Future State: Wonder Woman wasn't included in the timeline.

Because there is some crossover with characters in the different books and Future State: Justice League, which takes place in 2040, it's entirely likely that Wonder Woman is set sometime between 2025 and 2040.

9 Wonder Woman: Future State Is By Joëlle Jones

Comic book fans will know that Joëlle Jones has done a lot of cover art over the years for various publishers. Most recently, her artwork has been part of the Batman and Catwoman series for DC Comics, most notably the events surrounding the wedding of the characters.

Like the Catwoman series, however, Jones is pulling double duty for Wonder Woman. She's both the credited writer and artist for the new story. As a result, she's also credited with creating this new version of Wonder Woman.

8 Wonder Woman Is Yara Flor

DC Future State Wonder Woman Yara Flor

There's been a lot of speculation as to who could replace Diana Prince as Wonder Woman. This new Wonder Woman still dons the red and blue that the hero tends to favor in her uniforms, but she's an all new character. Named Yara Flor, Wonder Woman is Brazilian and not Themysciran royalty.

In fact, Superman Group Editor Jamie S. Rich revealed in an interview with IGN that Yara isn't actually living in Brazil when she's operating as Wonder Woman. Instead, she's immigrated to America, a detail that will also play into her story.

7 Future State: Wonder Woman Is Not The Same As Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman

Nubia. Immortal Wonder Woman. Future State

As part of the "Future State" line up, there are actually three different Wonder Woman books being released. One of those is Yara Flor's story, but the other two are about different women with the title.

The second book is Immortal Wonder Woman, which will feature stories of Diana as well as the often overlooked Nubia. Nubia, Diana's sister in some continuities, will also get her own book, titled simply, Nubia. Wonder Woman fans have a lot to look forward to.

6 It's A Two-Part Story

Wonder Woman Amazon Tribe

Like all of the "Future State" titles, the story is only going to be told in two-parts. The first issue releases in January, while the second is scheduled for February. Stories that debut within the "Future State" crossover will help shape the future of DC's titles.

Of course, that's not to say that all of the stories start in their "Future State" titles. Wonder Woman fans will have seen the groundwork laid for a tribe of Amazons in Brazil in the most recent Wonder Woman Annual as Atalanta revealed that there was a group of Amazon-like women living somewhere in South America.

5 Yara Is On A Mission To Rescue Her "Sister"

Themyscira

The official summary of the two-part Wonder Woman story reveals that Yara isn't on a hero's run of the mill quest. Instead, she's on a more personal mission directly related to her role as Wonder Woman.

According to the official summary from DC Comics, Yara is on a mission "to rescue one of her Themysciran sisters." Just how much Yara knows about Themyscira, and who she is rescuing, is still under wraps. Considering the Themyscirans only recently found out about the possibility of Amazons living in South America, it will certainly be interesting to see how much they know about one another in the future.

4 Yara Is Going To The Underworld

Wonder-Woman-Hades

The mission to save someone from Themyscira is going to take Yara a long way from home. Specifically, it's going to take her to the Underworld, which isn't a place often traveled to in Wonder Woman comics these days. Many years ago, Nubia used to guard one of the entrances to the Underworld, and it led to her and Diana crossing paths a few times.

Yara's adventure sounds like it's going to be pretty dangerous as DC's summary for the second issue has her going up against Hades himself as well as demons in order to save her target.

3 Yara Will Have To Learn "To Be A Goddess"

Wonder Woman Yara Flor And Diana Prince

Diana Prince spends her formative years raised on Themyscira. She is essentially royalty among the Amazons. When she makes the trek to "Man's World," Diana is seen as a goddess thanks to her time as Wonder Woman, which is true depending on the continuity of her story at the time.

When speaking with IGN, Jamie S. Rich notes that Yara doesn't have that background, but not much of her background is known just yet. She'll have to "learn to be a goddess." It doesn't sound like Yara knows much about her connection to the Amazons until she actually becomes Wonder Woman.

2 Wonder Woman Will Face Betrayal

Wonder Woman. Future State.

So far, comic book fans don't know who will populate Yara Flor's story other than the title character and Hades. What they do know is that part of her journey will feature a major betrayal.

The summary for the second issue reveals that, "betrayed by a close ally, Yara's back is against the wall," when she goes into battle against demons. Is this ally someone already known to Wonder Woman fans? Or is it someone new introduced for Yara's story?

1 Diana Is Absent

One big question fans will be faced with when Yara Flor makes her Wonder Woman debut is just where is Diana. Diana Prince is the most famous version of Wonder Woman at this point, no matter how many characters have tried to take on the mantle.

Just where Diana is, and why Yara ends up as Wonder Woman, will be part of her story. Though Diana might be absent from Yara's story, she will be present at "the end of time" in Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman, so fans won't be missing her too much.
