WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1 by Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Jen Bartel and Pat Brosseau, on sale now.

The Future State of the DC Universe has shown fans what could happen decades or even millennia from now. In Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1, the end of the universe is nigh and it has brought about some surprising changes in the status quo of the DC Trinity. Unsurprisingly, Diana survived all this time, with little changing about her other than a very tasteful streak of gray to her hair. But with the universe coming undone it seems apparent that Wonder Woman cannot stop it alone. It's a good thing Darkseid is there to help her. Right?

Wonder Woman vs Darkseid

At the end of the universe's lifespan, only a few of the DC Universe's heroes remain -- and even fewer of their enemies. Man's world has fallen as Wonder Woman tries desperately to keep Swamp Thing alive and through him, the Green. It's a losing battle though, and she knows it. At the same time, Diana is trying to use her experience and wisdom to convince her remaining Amazon sisters to find a new home planet. But they refused to listen, stubbornly holding on to their warrior ways, even though there doesn't seem to be anyone left to fight.

Of course, there is someone left to fight. Right now, that someone is running away from an even more terrifying something. On Apokolips, Darkseid listens as Barda and Orion try to convince him to help them fight against the Undoing, a cosmic force of destruction dismantling the universe. Having already finished off New Genesis, the Undoing was coming for Apokolips next. Darkseid seemed largely unconcerned, even as the entity tore Barda, Orion and Apokolips apart. As he fled Apokolips, he marveled at the power of the Undoing, calling it the true Anti-Life Equation. But this was no power he could harness. Instead, it was coming for him and everything else in existence.

For whatever reasons -- perhaps to get one last rush of domination or perhaps just to settle an old score -- Darkseid made a beeline for Earth. He tore through an aged Superman and tossed aside Wonder Woman. But while her Amazon sisters fell before his power, Clark got up again and held Darkseid off. Meanwhile, Diana was forced to watch Swamp Thing finally pass away, and with him any hope of saving the Earth. And yet somehow, Wonder Woman and Darkseid are going to team up to stop the Undoing.

It seems impossible, especially given the way Darkseid came to Earth in the issue, but it isn't unheard of for him and Wonder Woman to team up. It's happened before, years ago during the 1988 mini-series Cosmic Odyssey by Jim Starlin, Mike Mignola and Carlos Garzon. Ironically, a similar catastrophe was happening. An Anti-Life entity threatened to kill all of existence, forcing Darkseid and Highfather to team up with the Justice League to stop it. Now, with the situation even more dire, these two ancient enemies will have to put aside any bad blood to save what's left of their universe.
