WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Superman/Wonder Woman #1, from Dan Watters, Leila Del Duca, Nick Filardi and Tom Napolitano, on sale now.

Jon Kent is having quite a time in DC's Future State era as the new, young Man of Steel. He's gone to war with his cousin, Kara, fought a new Brainiac, left Metropolis in a dire state and he's also struggling to convince the Justice League to become a cohesive family.

And come Superman/Wonder Woman #1, we discover just how hard it was without having Superman/Kal-El around. Clark Kent's hottest enemy arrives in Earth's orbit and seemingly breaks Jon for good thanks to some deadly blasts of sunshine.

Jon is trying to enjoy a rare bit of peace in Metropolis when realizes there are two suns in the sky, which is going to be a massive problem. The second son is none other than Solaris, the artificial sun Grant Morrison brought to life in stories like DC One Million and All-Star Superman. It's a highly-advanced piece of pyro-tech that's been absorbing suns from various solar systems, powering up so that it could fulfill its destiny of killing every generation of Supermen.

Solaris' first scrap comes when an ally of Yara (the new Wonder Woman) decides he wants the first swing. This is none other than Kuat, the Brazilian sun god, who jumps on his flaming mule and challenges the Tyrant Sun to a race. Kuat stumbles in the race, so he then baits Polaris into a show of strength, with each trying to their best to turn up the heat.

But as this sizzling competition roars on in space, Earth's geomagnetic fields are thrown off, causing climate issues. Jon and Yara have to travel the globe to put out fires, all while Kuat throws shade on the man-made star. Eventually, Kuat wins, leaving Solaris to reboot so it can ensure Jon loses when they meet. Unaware of what's happened, Jon heads off into the dark recesses to confront Solaris, challenging him to a test of strength the next day so he can avoid violence and harm to the planet.

They agree, but there's one major major problem. Superman loses control of his powers -- flight and heat vision -- and falls to the streets. It turns out that Solaris and Kuat's battle of strength alternately power and depowered the son of the last son of Krypton. This dynamic has messed with his equilibrium could potentially cause Jon to lose his powers forever. Worse yet, Jon could end up like All-Star Superman and die of Kryptonian cancer, so it sin't the smartest move to face a recharging Solaris, who'll be even stronger once the 24 hours are up.
