WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Robin Eternal #2 by Meghan Fitzmartin, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas, and Pat Brosseau, on sale now.

Future State: Robin Eternal has changed Tim Drake's life forever in a dystopian cyberpunk Gotham after he fought with a Cyber and got dosed with the Lazarus Resin. This possible future timeline has brought Tim back to life, though, fixing his broken neck, making him stronger, faster, and better.

However, Future State: Robin Eternal #2 reveals that while he's now a super-soldier, the former Robin isn't his old self and as a result, he gets broken like never before due to the mental effects of the serum.

The Lazarus Pit messes with people's minds, as seen with Jason Todd in his past resurrection, and ironically, as much as Tim wrecks all the Peacekeepers, he's wondering if he's going to have a damaged psyche too. Interestingly, he's losing bits of his humanity while he fights, with ghosts from the past such as Two-Face, as well as Nightwing and Damian, all telling him he can't measure up to Batman in saving the city.

Strangely, it's the Dark Knight's shadow that's haunting Tim, tormenting and making him feel inadequate about how he's going to get his loved ones killed, especially colleagues like Spoiler and Darcy. It wants him to fail and become a monster, remembering how he lost his own family years ago. Tim staves off the poison running through his veins, though, but he knows that time is ticking.

When they confront the Peacekeepers, things gets a bit more sinister as they reveal it was all a setup. They needed a guinea pig to bathe in the Resin and now their job is to take Tim's body back to dissect it. This unleashes him like never before but thankfully, while Spoiler gets carted off, he's able to stop the rest without going off the hinges and save Darcy.

They come up with a Hail Mary play, however, to dump the convoy of Resin into the Gotham lake as organic fluid can render the synthetic material inert. That bit of pollution aside, when Tim falls in with the shipment, and it's clear that this sacrifice must be made to keep the resin from the Magistrate's forces.

Robin's never been shattered like this but to him, this heroic sacrifice is the light at the end of the tunnel. However, it's an open ending because as we see Tim's hand in the water as the story ends, it's not clear if he's rising up, or going down to drown. Even if he does emerge, it's unknown if he'll still have the Resin affecting him or if it really has been washed away and he can reprise duties as a mentally sound vigilante.
