WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Future State: Dark Detective #1 by Mariko Tamaki, Dan Mora, Jordie Bellaire and Aditya Bidikar, on sale now.

DC's futuristic, dystopian event Future State has introduced a new version of Gotham City that is policed by a militarized force known as the Magistrate. The Magistrate works with the mayor's office to maintain law and order in the city, and their Peacekeepers, robots and drones are tasked with hunting down anyone who wears a mask -- be they a vigilante or a villain. The Bat-family is no more and, in Future State: Dark Detective #1, we find a Bruce Wayne who is now on the run and penniless.

But despite all of these changes, Bruce opts to fight back. After being shot, he and Batman are both believed dead, which he uses to his advantage. Now, Bruce becomes the Dark Detective, and his mission to protect Gotham goes back to basics -- just like it was when he first started his crusade, all those years ago.

Bruce Wayne spends most of Future State: Dark Detective wondering what he should do next. But that changes once he comes to the conclusion that with Bruce Wayne and Batman both believed dead, he has all the time he needs to focus on the Magistrate. The military force has used Wayne Enterprise's technology to become what they now are, which means Bruce knows how to tear it all down, no matter how long it will take him.

Assuming the mantle of the Dark Detective, Bruce Wayne is now a vigilante, all alone in a city that's hunting him down. Now, he doesn't have a fortune, a fancy suit, or advanced gadgets, weapons, and vehicles to help him in his crusade. All that he has is what is on him: half of his armor, a cowl and a grappling gun. With no Batcaves, no Batmobiles and no sidekicks, this is Bruce all on his own, with nothing but his grit and his drive.

Bruce's crusade has been stripped to its bare minimum, and this makes the next part of his quest similar to how it all began. With a makeshift armor and no one else to depend on, Batman is nearly taken back to the likes of his "Zero Year" days.

These development years in the future is also similar to what has happened recently in the pages of the main Batman title. Following the conclusion of the Joker War, the Wayne family fortune was kept out of Bruce's reach. With no money and a giant mansion where he was now living alone, Bruce opted to move into the city, where he would use what little was left of his arsenal to protect Gotham in a more basic, down-to-earth manner.

In Future State, however, the situation is even worse because not only is Bruce on his own with almost no equipment, he is also operating in a city policed by an organization that means to take him down. With very little equipment, Batman is now vulnerable, and he is easily wounded. He's no longer the infallible hero he once was. This makes his crusade all the more dangerous -- and it comes at a time when the fates of the city, its people and its remaining heroes are all at stake.
