DC Entertainment first announced last month that a "Batman Day" had been scheduled for July 23, commemorating the 75th anniversary of The Dark Knight's debut. The publisher revealed details on Tuesday of what the occasion actually entails, headlined by a new version on "Detective Comics" #27, the storied first appearance of Batman, made available for free to fans at participating retailers.

The new "Detective Comics" #27 will be designed by renowned designer and Bat-fan Chip Kidd, and scripted by DC veteran and best-selling novelist Brad Meltzer. The comic will also be available as a free download that day on various digital platforms.

Other Bat-centric promotional items will also be made available to retailers, including a Batman 75th anniversary cape, books marks and four masks, designed by "The New 52: Futures End" cover artist Ryan Sook, focusing on distinct eras in the Caped Crusader's history: "Detective Comics" #27 (Bob Kane), "Batman '66" (Adam West), "The Dark Knight Returns" (Frank Miller) and the current New 52 era (Greg Capullo).

July 23 is also a Wednesday, meaning New Comic Book Day -- with "Batman Day" coinciding with the launches of two recently announced new series, "Robin Rises: Omega" and "Grayson." DC's press release states a subsequent "Batman Day" will be held that Saturday, July 26, at 1,000 libraries across the country.
