Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has left Mad Max spin-off Furiosa and will be replaced by Mank's Tom Burke.

According to Deadline, Burke will replace Abdul-Mateen in Furiosa as a result of a scheduling conflict with the latter actor. Just what project Abdul-Mateen will be a part of instead is unknown, but it's reportedly a passion project he's been trying to get made for quite some time. Details about Burke's character have not yet been released.

Abdul-Mateen is an actor best known for his roles as David Kane/Black Manta in 2018's Aquaman and Cal Abar in 2019's Watchman. He also recently starred in the 2021 reboot of Candyman and several other high-profile projects. His next movie will be The Matrix Resurrections, in which he plays a younger version of Morpheus. That film is set to release on Dec. 22.

Burke, who will replace Abdul-Mateen, is known for his work in several BBC adaptions, including The Musketeers and War & Peace. In 2020, Burke played Orson Welles in Mank, which was directed by David Fincher. That movie was nominated for ten Academy Awards and six Golden Globes.

Announced in 2018, Furiosa is a prequel to 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road. The movie is said to explore Furiosa's backstory. At the start of Fury Road, Imperator Furiosa -- there played by Charlize Theron -- found herself betraying the tyrannical Immortan Joe and looking to get back to a paradise called the Green Place. The first movie in the franchise in 30 years, Fury Road proved very successful with critics. Currently, the movie holds a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Furiosa will see The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy play the younger version of the titular character. Director George Miller said he originally intended to have Theron reprise the role via digital de-aging, but decided against using the technology. Instead, he opted to audition Taylor-Joy after seeing her in Edgar Wright's Last Night in Soho.

Furiosa is expected to release on May 24, 2024. Production on the film begins in 2022 in New South Wales, with Australian Premier Gladys Berejiklian claiming the movie would be the largest movie ever made in the region. Taylor-Joy will be joined by Chris Hemsworth, who is best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
