Mad Max prequel Furiosa received an official synopsis teasing the return of an iconic villain from the franchise.

Warner Bros. released a synopsis for the film, which revealed that the upcoming prequel would see Furiosa "snatched from the Green Place" and thrown into the hands of the Warlord Dementus. As they travel across the Wasteland, they will encounter The Immortan Joe and "the two Tyrants [will] war for dominance."

The upcoming prequel/spinoff tells the origin story of its titular hero who was first portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth entry into the long-running franchise created by George Miller. Fury Road starred Theron alongside Tom Hardy as an updated version of the series' eponymous antihero, Mad Max. It also introduced Hugh Keays-Byrne's Immortan Joe, a wasteland warlord who rules over his subjugates with a cruel, twisted fist.

A Young Furiosa

Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play the titular role of Furiosa opposite Chris Hemsworth in the prequel. The Thor: Love and Thunder star was confirmed for the film in 2020. More recent reports state that he will be playing a villain named Dementus, apparently in line with what little information fans were given in Warner Bros.' synopsis.

Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth will be joined in the film by War & Peace actor Tom Burke, who will appear in a currently undisclosed role previously filled by Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. The latter ultimately dropped out of the film due to scheduling conflicts with another project that the actor has described as a "passion project."

Furiosa will be the latest entry into a franchise that began with 1979's Mad Max starring Mel Gibson. The original film established the series' now-iconic post-apocalyptic setting, one which has devolved to the delight of fans across subsequent films. Hemsworth announced that filming was officially underway with a tweet stating that "A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins," along with the first look at the film's jagged Furiosa logo.
