Warner Bros. is moving forward with Furiosa, a spinoff of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, starring Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants), Chris Hemsworth (Marvel Studios' Thor trilogy) and  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, HBO's Watchmen).

According to DeadlineFuriosa will be a standalone movie that chronicles the origins of the title character, originally played by Charlize Theron in Fury Road. Miller will direct, co-write and produce Furiosa with his Oscar-nominated partner, producer Doug Mitchell.

A leaked Furiosa casting call from August listed Hemsworth in consideration for the role of Dementus, who is described as a 30-40-year-old man who is "breathtakingly handsome" and possesses "an angel's face, scarred by a deep forehead wounded stitched together with shiny chrome staples."

Anya Taylor-Joy portrayed Illyana Rasputin/Magik in Josh Boone's The New Mutants. The film suffered from many delays which were attributed to Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox and the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic closing theaters around the world. This forced movie theaters to delay the majority of films. The New Mutants finally released in partially-reopened theaters on Aug. 28.

Chris Hemsworth has played Thor, the God of Thunder, across eight films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will next be seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, which arrives in theaters Feb. 11, 2022. Thor will also play a role in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. Production is expected to begin in early 2021.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II starred as the DC villain Black Manta in 2018's Aquaman. Along with joining the cast of The Matrix 4 and the Candyman reboot, Abdul-Mateen II also played Doctor Manhattan in the award-winning HBO series, Watchmen.

Mad Max: Fury Road followed Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky as he traveled through a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland, where he encountered Theron's Furiosa and her gang of cult escapees. They worked together to travel across the dangerous terrain, which featured epic battles and visual effects.

Helmed by George Miller, Mad Max: Furiosa stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, The film does not yet have an announced release date.
