During a New York Comic-Con interview, Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller shared his thoughts on what becomes of protagonist Furiosa after the film ends.

The feminist action hero, played by Charlize Theron, was last seen battling and eventually killing the evil dictator Immortan Joe. After the film's final battle, Furiosa returns to the Citadel and is celebrated by the citizens. However, the audience is left to speculate on whether this new peaceful society is sustainable. Miller offered up two possible paths that Furiosa may have taken after the credits rolled. "One is utopian. I imagined the first thing she’d do in line with that is go up and release the water." For the second option, Miller cited author Joseph Campbell's theory on heroism. "Campbell said that the usual story is that today’s hero becomes tomorrow’s tyrant. The hero is the agent of change... You develop the dogma and basically then you have to protect it."

Furiosa becoming a tyrant herself after spending the entire film fighting against one seems improbable but not unlikely. The "anti-hero" device is becoming more and more popularized across film and TV platforms. Luckily, Miller seems to think higher of the character. “I think she’s too smart to fall into that trap. She’s already seen it with the Immortan Joe."

Though audiences will need to wait for a definitive answer on what happens to Furiosa, Miller has announced a Mad Max prequel is already in development.
