The fourth installment in writer-director George Miller's Mad Max series, Fury Road hit theaters on May 15, 2015. The film starred Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky opposite Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. The prequel/spinoff film seeks to tell Furiosa's origin story, with Miller returning to direct and Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants, The Queen's Gambit) taking over for Theron as a younger version of the eponymous character. In addition to Furiosa, Miller is also developing a direct sequel to Fury Road, titled Mad Max: The Wasteland.

It first came to light in August 2020 that Furiosa was courting Hemsworth for a major role. The Illuminerdi reported that Warner Bros. was eyeing the Marvel Cinematic Universe star to play the Fury Road prequel's male lead, simply known as Dementus. In October 2020, Deadline reported that Hemsworth had officially joined the cast of Furiosa.

Earlier this year, Kyle Buchanan -- author of the book Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road -- was a guest on the podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David. During his appearance, Buchanan lent additional credence to The Illuminerdi's initial report, stating that Hemsworth would be playing a villain named Dr. Dementus in Furiosa.

Furiosa is currently slated to release in theaters on May 24, 2024. Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth will be joined in the film by Tom Burke (War & Peace), who has been cast in an undisclosed role. Burke's mystery character was originally supposed to be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom). However, Abdul-Mateen ultimately dropped out of the project due to a scheduling conflict.
