IDW Publishing and toymaker Funko will join forces in May for a month-long series of one-shot comics featuring Pop! vinyl versions of the publisher's licensed properties "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Ghostbusters," "The X-Files," "Judge Dredd" and "Strawberry Shortcake."
In addition to those five one-shot comics, Funko Universe Month will feature special Funko variant covers for "Back to the Future" #20, "Orphan Black: Deviations" #3, "Dirk Gently: The Salmon of Doubt" #8, "Star Trek: Boldly Go" #8, "The Powerpuff Girls: The Time Tie" #1, "Donald Duck" #20, "Mickey Mouse" #20 and "Walt Disney's Comics & Stories" #738, all released in May.
“Funko’s popularity is off the charts, and IDW is excited to bring these characters to life in comic book fashion,” said Greg Goldstein, IDW's president and chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to expand our relationship with Funko with this unique event.”
“Funko collectibles began in comic book shops," added Ben Butcher, Funko's vice president of creative. "We’re thrilled to get back to our roots in this one-of-a-kind collaboration!”
Founded in 1998, Funko produces such popular lines as Pop! vinyl, Dorbz, Vinyl Idolz and Rock Candy. As part of its subscription-box service partnerships with Marvel and DC Comics -- Marvel Collector Corps and Legion of Collectors -- the company includes Pop! variant covers of some comic books.
