The two new movies serve as direct sequels to the 2017 live-action film and were announced as part of the celebration surrounding the 20th anniversary of the original manga's publication. Ryosuke Yamada and Atomu Mizuishi, who played the siblings Edward and Alphonse Elric in the first movie, will reprise their roles in both films. Joining them will be actor and musician Dean Fujioka, who anime fans may recognize for his musical contributions to Yuri!! on Ice, who portrays the fan-favorite Flame Alchemist Roy Mustang. Other returning cast members from the 2017 film include Tsubasa Honda (Weathering With You) as Winry Rockbell and Kanata Hongo (live-action Attack on Titan) as the homonculus Envy. Ping Pong director Fumihiko Sori will also return to direct both movies.

The movies were originally announced with a teaser image of Scar, who will be played in live-action by Mackenyu. The Japanese-American actor, who is the son of renowned martial artist and actor Sonny Chiba, has appeared in numerous live-action anime adaptations over the last few years, including the three Chihayafuru movies. In addition to FMA, he will also appear in Netflix's upcoming One Piece reboot, where he will play the role of the swordsman Roronoa Zoro, and will also star in the upcoming live-action Saint Seiya/Knights of the Zodiac movie as its lead character.

Fullmetal Alchemist was created by Hiromi Arakawa in 2001 and was one of the most popular and acclaimed titles of that era. The series was adapted into an anime twice; the 2003 show diverges wildly from the source material, while 2009's Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood presents a much more faithful adaptation. Both shows are now streaming on Hulu and Crunchyroll, while Arakawa's manga is available in English from VIZ Media and Yen Press.
