In many Shonen action series, costume design is just as important as the character design itself, or the combat and magic system. "Clothes make the man," as the old saying goes, and this will also apply to women, aliens, monsters, and sometimes even androids in works of Shonen manga and anime. A person's tastes, lifestyle, worldview, profession, and much more can be determined by how they dress, both in anime and real life. Some clothes or accessories may look silly or strange on the wrong person, but make for an elegant (or intimidating) look on others.

In Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, many of the characters are military soldiers or officers and thus wear uniforms. But plenty of villains, rogues, and civilians have their own choice in outfits, and some look better than others. Some characters have weird tastes, or they're down on their luck and can't find something better to wear. How do they compare?

10 Best: Edward Elric

The hero of any Shonen series should stand out in any scene, and the same is true here with the shorty alchemist Edward Elric. He wears practical but distinct clothes, from his black jacket and his oversized boots to his belt. He also wears that distinctive red cloak, and everyone everywhere knows about the little alchemist in red! Not only that, but Edward worked some fancy alchemy symbology onto his coat. Late in the series, right before the Promised Day, Ed had lost his trademark red coat, but he borrowed some fabric and made a new one with alchemy. Might as well save the world in style!

9 Worst: Envy

Envy is a shapeshifting homunculus, and though he won't admit it, he secretly longs to have the same passion and sense of belonging that human beings have. To this end, he often imitates them, and it's a good thing because his regular appearance is bizarre. What on earth is he wearing? It looks like the top half of a wrestler's shirt, and it's an ugly dark brown/red color that flatters no one. He's also got weird shorts on, and his shoes, if you could call them that, are like fingerless gloves for the feet. It looks completely ridiculous, and these clothes returned even when Envy was destroyed and assembled a new body for himself. Greed was right to call him a bad dresser when they met up early in the series!

8 Best: Lust

Not all of the homunculi are poor dressers. Lust, contrasting with Envy, wears an outfit that is not unlike an elegant gown, and it bares her shoulders and has a slit leading up her thigh for elegance. She also has high-heeled boots and elbow-length gloves, which vaguely allude to her Ultimate Spear coming from her fingers.

This outfit has proven both attractive and practical, and Lust has no problem moving around in combat. As a bonus, she neatly has her Ouroboros tattoo on the hollow of her neck. Symmetry counts!

7 Worst: Sloth

Here's another homunculus who can't tell a sock from a hat. Or maybe Father dressed him instead, since Sloth is the embodiment of laziness and wasted potential! Like Envy, his outfit is not so much clothing as it is... things. He has regular but plain pants and boots, but his chest is covered with a few thick straps of some sort. What do they do for him? Nothing. Given everything, it might have been better if Sloth were simply barechested instead, like how Alex Louis Armstrong often is. Oddly enough, the chains and manacles around his wrists ended up being used against him during his fight with Olivier and Alex. Oops!

6 Best: Van Hohenheim

Here's the thing to know about Van Hohenheim: he's a gentleman, and he makes sure to dress for the part. Early in life, he just wore slave garments in Xerxes, but that changed. Now, many years later, he never fails to show off the finest men's fashion of Amestris, complete with a coat, a fine single-breasted vest, and a fine shirt and tie. His shoes, neat grooming, and cool glasses make him look like a rogue professor, and it matches his bottomless brilliance and knowledge of alchemy.

He's a wandering sage of sorts, but he trades shabby robes for the height of Edwardian fashion!

5 Worst: Winry Rockbell

Winry wears several different outfits in the series, and to be fair, she dresses nicely in most of them. But she does have one fashion faux pas: her first outfit! It's true that she's spending time working on automail rather than attending a charity ball. Still, her wardrobe is bizarre when we first meet her. Combine a bandana, poofy gray pants, sandals, and a narrow black tube top, and you get... uh, that. Why a tube top, of all things? Amestris has a steampunk Edwardian look to it, but that doesn't seem to be true out yonder in Resembool. Thankfully, Winry soon abandons that odd look and dresses like a lady. Especially in the epilogue, where an older Ed and Winry are parents (and Ed really resembles his father in that photo).

4 Best: Greed

Now for the final homunculus of this list. Greed's first outfit is a bit eccentric, but it works better than either Envy's or Sloth's. He wears a skintight top to define his abs, and he wears black pants and shoes that bend up at the toes. Don't forget his cool sleeveless jacket with fur lining, which really sets him apart from his estranged peers.

His glasses are quite interesting, too, and give him a sense of punkish style and a vaguely professor-ish look too. He abandons this outfit later, though, and when he's reborn in Ling's body, he opts for a long black cloak (or whatever Ling happens to be wearing).

3 Worst: Barry the Chopper

Barry is a soul in armor, like Al, but doesn't look nearly as cool. He's got fur ruffs like Greed, but in his case, it looks silly and unnecessary. He doesn't even have body heat! Why bother with the fur? The rest of his outfit involves an asymmetrical beige coat and an oddly animalistic helmet. At first, he's a bit scary, but once the comic relief sets in, Barry is pretty difficult to take seriously. He just ambles around in that silly armor with Ling, until Lust destroys him with her elongated fingers.

2 Best: Ling Yao

Ling is a prince from Xing, a faraway nation loosely based on China. His outfit is simple but practical, and he knows better than to wander around in full regalia and draw attention to himself. He opts for Chinese-style pants and black slippers (good for running in, apparently), and he's also got a vivid yellow jacket with cool red flame patterns on it. He's a bit flamboyant, but no one would recognize him as a prince, which was probably the idea.

1 Worst: Yoki

Best Worst Outfits yoki (10)

Yoki's story is a half hilarious, half tragic tale of a corrupt officer's fall from grace. No longer does he wear the uniform. Now, down on his luck, he dresses in shabby clothes that he might have dug out of a dumpster, and he's got stubble and a crooked mustache to match. He cuts a low profile, since he dresses like a tramp, though Scar doesn't seem to mind. Love him or hate him, Yoki represents the bottom of Amestris fashion!
