The hit animated series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood tells a lot of story in just 64 episodes, and a huge cast of fully fleshed-out characters populate this story, heroes and villains and rogues alike. In the Amestris military, it can be difficult to tell friend from foe, since Father is secretly controlling everything through Wrath/King Bradley and the other generals.

Where does Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye fit in all this? She's a sharpshooter and a veteran of the Ishval Civil War, and rifles and pistols are her best tools for survival. She could use a partner or two on a mission, and based on their personality or combat skills, some characters are better suited to work with her than others. Let's see who makes the team, and who does not.

10 Team Up With: Greed

Greed Smiling At The Elric Brothers

Although Greed's personality is a bit unsavory, he is more of a rogue than a true villain like Pride and Lust. Instead, Greed is an opportunist, and he's willing to work with anyone if it means he gets what he wants. He can be surprisingly easy to work with at times.

Riza Hawkeye could use Greed's Ultimate Shield to protect her from ambushes, and Greed can keep the enemies busy with his hardened body while Riza snipes her foes from afar. Greed makes for a great lure since he doesn't die easily.

9 Reject: Prince Ling

Greed from FMAB

In some ways, Ling is like Greed: he is recklessly ambitious and wants to seize power at any cost. To that end, he became the willing vessel of Greed's Philosopher's Stone, and they became partners soon after.

However, the original prince Ling is rather obnoxious and unpredictable, and he has an odd habit of getting himself into trouble. Riza has no need for such an unreliable and eccentric partner, and his personality would be grating even for a patient person like Riza.

8 Team Up With: Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric

Despite his fearsome appearance as a giant, empty suit of armor, Alphonse Elric is a gentle and kind person who made a tragic mistake. He is much more agreeable and patient than Ed and is quick to comfort others in need, including stray cats.

Riza Hawkeye might find Al a bit naive but otherwise easy to get along with during a mission, and she could really make use of Al's alchemy skills and tough body. He would serve as an excellent bodyguard while Riza sniped her targets.

7 Reject: Lust

Lust is a homunculus like Greed, but she is quite a vicious creature who has no time for games. She is an assassin and a squad leader, and she will go to great lengths to enforce Father's will, including threatening children and cruelly taunting her enemies.

Riza Hawkeye would find that horribly distasteful; she would rather not threaten innocent children to get the mission done. Also, Lust's bodyguard skills are more limited than Greed's; Lust performs better on the offensive. Riza already has her rifles for that.

6 Team Up With: Dr. Marcoh

Dr. Tim Marcoh was the one who invented the Philosopher's Stones for Father, and it has weighed greatly on his conscious ever since. He is now a doctor in a remote town, healing people with his alchemy rather than hurting them.

Riza can respect that, and Dr. Marcoh's healing alchemy would be wonderfully useful if Riza ever took a hit during a mission or if she came across wounded civilians. Dr. Marcoh can also, presumably, use regular alchemy to create barriers to protect Riza or create new doors in walls to make a quick escape easier.

5 Reject: Solf. J Kimblee

kimblee fma

Here is a state alchemist who manages to be Dr. Marcoh's total opposite. Instead of healing other people or caring for them, Kimblee takes great delight in blowing up buildings and groups of people. He says that the sound of explosions is like music.

Hawkeye would no doubt find this horrifying, and she also wouldn't like how Kimblee is entirely offense-oriented. His explosions just make a mess, and the smoke would block Riza's line of sight. He wouldn't do much to protect her during a mission, either.

4 Team Up With: Alex Louis Armstrong

Here is a state alchemist whose personality and methods are more palatable for Riza Hawkeye. Major Alex Armstrong survived Ishval like Kimblee, but unlike Kimblee, his will broke. He couldn't bear to keep killing innocents for no clear reason.

RELATED: FMA: Who's the Better Fighter, Pride or Wrath?

However, Armstrong is no pacifist. He can use his great strength and alchemy alike to create barriers, reshape walls, and fling projectiles. He is effective at close and long-range alike, and Riza could use a partner like that.

3 Reject: Maes Hughes

Here is another Ishval veteran, and he seemed practically oblivious to what was going on. He didn't enjoy the war like Kimblee, nor did he break down like Alex Armstrong. He did his duty and went home to see his family.

Maes is a smart officer and a wonderful family man, but he doesn't necessarily have the advanced skills to work alongside Riza Hawkeye during a dangerous mission, and he can't use alchemy, either. Riza needs more than a kind personality for a mission.

2 Team Up With: Olivier Armstrong

Olivier Mira Armstrong with her saber in FMA: brotherhood

Olivier Armstrong may not be an alchemist, but she is a tough commander who can take on homunculi without blinking. She is a fearless fighter who can handle nearly any opponent with those swords of hers, and she can command her men to do the rest.

In addition to protecting Riza, Olivier can help study the mission's parameters and analyze any situation from a leader's perspective. That can help the two of them figure out the best route to victory, or abort a mission that becomes untenable.

1 Reject: Scar

Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Scar is an Ishvalan monk who, with his brother's help, acquired the power to perform alchemy. As a religious man, he sees the creation aspect of alchemy as blasphemy against the god Ishval, so he only uses it to destroy.

Overall, Scar is rather preoccupied, and he can be unpredictable and self-absorbed at times. Riza would rather not have such an ally, and it doesn't help that Scar is highly reluctant to create barriers or otherwise reshape matter with alchemy.
