The producers of the Fruits Basket anime series have announced a new anime project that will focus on the story of Tohru's parents.

Entitled Kyoko to Katsuya no Monogatari (literally translated as "The Story of Kyoko and Katsuya"), the new project was announced on Twitter and a teaser trailer was posted to YouTube shortly after the airing of the final episode of the Fruits Basket anime in Japan. Kyoko and Katsuya are the parents of series protagonist Tohru Honda. The producers of the show did not specify if this new anime is being created as a TV series, movie or OVA.

Fruits Basket was created by Natsuki Takaya and was originally published in 1998. It tells the story of Tohru Honda, an orphaned schoolgirl who becomes involved in the lives of the Soma family, a group of people who are all afflicted with a curse that causes them to transform into an animal if they become stressed, weak, or are embraced by a member of a different gender. Though both Katsuya and Kyoko Honda are dead by the time the main Fruits Basket series begins, Tohru's parents continue to have a large influence on the characters and events presented in the story. An anime based on the manga aired in 2001, but that series ended before it could fully adapt all chapters of the manga. A second anime series, which adapts the complete story, began airing in 2019.

The new Fruits Basket spinoff will go into production in 2022. A release date has not been announced. All three seasons of the Fruits Basket 2019 anime series are available for streaming on Funimation and Crunchyroll.
