Thirty-six questions. Six answers. One random number generator. Welcome to Robot Roulette, where creators roll the virtual dice and answer our questions about their lives, careers, interests and more.
Our special guest today is Ryan Stegman, artist of Superior Spider-Man, Scarlet Spider, Fantastic Four, She-Hulks and more.
Now let’s get to it …
7. What is the strangest thing you have in your house?
Probably the two-year-old human that I created with the help of my wife. Doesn’t get much weirder than two-year-olds…Watching them have conversations with themselves in jibberish and seeing what interests them on a minute-to-minute basis.
12. What comic (or graphic novel, webcomic, etc.) was your “gateway drug” and made you a comic fan?
The first time I got into comics it was Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man. Then I moved away from the comic book shop I knew of at that age and kind of got out of comics. Then I re-discovered them with Spawn when I was in high school. So…Pretty much I couldn’t keep Todd McFarlane out of my life.
24. What did you dress up as the last time you dressed in a costume?
The last one I really remember wearing was when I dressed up as “Weird Al” Yankovic in college. It was a matter of convenience though. I just happened to have a Weird Al-looking wig. And the only thing that really made it a Weird Al costume was that I insisted to everyone that I looked exactly like Weird Al and they were crazy for not seeing it.
27. What are you most proud of so far in your comics career?
Art-wise, it’s always the last issue I drew. If I didn’t feel that way I think I’d really lose it. So in this case, I think issue three of Superior Spider-Man is the best thing I’ve done. But overall, I’m just proud that I’ve been so persistent and that I never gave up. I don’t know what it was that kept me going in hindsight, but to have gotten to the point where I’m fulfilling a childhood dream drawing Spider-Man…It’s interesting to look back on everything else and realize how foolish it was for me to ever even think I’d get to this point!
30. What hobbies or interests do you have outside of comics?
I’m a sports nerd. When I say nerd, I mean it too. Like the thing that gets me most excited is statistics. I read basketball box scores every morning, same with baseball. In another life I probably did something with math as a career because I’ve always had a weird obsession with numbers. I also try my damnedest to keep up with the Kardashians.
32. Is there a particular song, band or style of music you listen to when you work?
It just depends on what I’m liking at the time. But I generally like music that is more up-tempo when I’m working. And I like to listen really, really loud. I like to be consumed by it. It puts me in a work trance.
