In a recent interview, Courteney Cox, who plays Monica on the hit sitcom Friends, revealed how, despite appearances, the show's famous fountain opening sequence was miserable to film given the duration of the time spent in the fountain.

When Cox was interviewed by Ellen DeGeneres for the show's upcoming reunion special, the two touched briefly on subject. "Well it definitely wasn't [my idea]," Cox said. "We were in that fountain for a long time... I don't know who - somebody thought would be really fun. And let me tell you what happens-- it's not fun to be dancing in the fountain for hours and hours." Cox mentioned that Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing on the show, stated at one point that he couldn't remember a time that the actors weren't in the fountain. The cast did not know each other well at this point, which may have lent to the overall discomfort of the scene.

Friends starred Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt Leblanc as 20-somethings living in the same New York apartment complex exploring life, love and growing into an adult. The show ran from 1994 and 2004 an spans 10 seasons. While the series was popular during its time on the air, the series gained a cult following for its long term existence upon Netflix, much like fellow millennial sitcom The Office.

The series has since left Netflix and is now available on HBO Max, where all 236 episodes are available to stream. Friends is expected to air its reunion episode sometime in 2021, with all of the original actors reprising their roles from the series. Filming recently wrapped, with more news on the special expected to arrive shortly. Whether or not the special will feature the original fountain opening remains to be seen, though hopefully for the actors' sake, they won't need to film an updated version. "Literally," Cox says during the interview. "We were just like -- 'Oh my god, how much longer are we going to pretend to love dancing in the water'."

Friends concluded its tenth and final season in 2004. However, the cast will return for Friends: The Reunion, which recently finished filming and will be released on HBO Max. The reunion was originally intended be to released at launch of the streaming service, but was delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
