Along with the first trailer for Marvel's "Cloak & Dagger," the ABC-owned Freeform unveiled a chilling glimpse at its upcoming mermaid drama "Siren."

Don't dismiss this as a teen twist on "Splash," though. It's heavy on the folklore and horror elements, with a dollop of romance; after all, it is Freeform, home to "Pretty Little Liars," "The Fosters" and "Shadowhunters."

Arriving in summer 2018, "Siren" is set in Bristol Cove, a town said to have once been home to mermaids, until they lost the battle with humanity. The arrival of a mysterious girl soon proves that to be more than local folklore or tourism-marketing gimmick, as the predatory creatures return to claim their right to the sea.

The series stars Alex Rose ("The 5th Wave") as Ben, a marine biologist who's drawn to Ryn (Eline Powell of "Game of Thrones"), a strange young woman with a dark secret. They're joined by Fola Evans-Akingbola ("An American Exorcism") as Maddie, a marine biologist who's highly suspicious of Ryn; Ian Verdun ("Life's a Drag") as Xander, a deep-sea fisherman on a quest to uncover the truth; and Rena Owen ("Star Wars" Episodes II and III) as Helen, the town eccentric who seems to know more about the mermaids than she pretends.

Based on a story by Eric Wald and Dean White , who serve as executive producers, "Siren" has received a 10-episode order from Freeform.
