Ryan Reynolds' latest film, Free Guy, follows a non-playable character in a video game who gains a new level of sentience and goes against his programming to manipulate the world around him. Through his journey, he also begins to learn more about his full capabilities in the video game and gains attributes from a much cooler character named Molotov Girl. While the film is fueled by Reynolds and his castmates' comedic timing and the heartfelt story, it bears multiple similarities to the animated classic, The LEGO Movie.

The LEGO Movie is an animated film that follows a mini-figure named Emmet, voiced by Chris Pratt, who is largely content with his day-to-day life. However, events change his life entirely as he begins to see the world in a new way and eventually learns that he is capable of great things. The movie helps inspire individuality and self-confidence but does so in a way that has audiences laughing from start to finish. But are these two films actually the same at their cores?

When compared by fans, the similarities between the two movies are hard to ignore. For starters, they both have leads that are meant to be generic characters with no defining qualities. The main character in Free Guy is literally named Guy, while Emmet follows the same routine every day. Both of them also live in blissful ignorance of the world around them, with Guy fulfilling his programming and Emmet succumbing to constant brainwashing. But the biggest connection between these two heroes is how, even when things get dangerous, they approach every threat with a smile.

Another similarity between these characters is their love interests. In Emmet's case, he falls for a Master Builder named Wyldstyle, whose sole purpose is to overthrow the corporate leader, President Business, in any way she can. Guy's love interest, Molotov Girl, follows a similar storyline, as her character's primary goal is to get back what's hers and stop the businessman, Antwan, who controls the video game they are in. Again, it's a simple similarity, but when compared, it's difficult to ignore how alike these characters actually are.

Perhaps the biggest connection between both films is the setting. The LEGO Movie takes place in a child's imagination as he plays with his LEGO sets in the basement. In comparison, Free Guy is set in a video game. Because neither of these worlds is real, the main characters are given unique abilities that wouldn't be possible otherwise. For example, Guy gets sunglasses that let him interact with the game as a real player would. In contrast, Emmet learns that he is a Master Builder, which allows his creativity to shine and allows him to see the world in a way that lets him build anything. As a result, they act as superpowers in each world and offer unprecedented freedom to the heroes.

At their cores, the films are very similar. But to say they are the same is harder to decipher. Free Guy's core message is for people to break away from the norm and try new things. Those that do may find a freer version of themself compared to those who live within their programming every day. In addition, The LEGO Movie promotes togetherness and creativity, showing that the best way to grow and get new ideas is by working together and having fun in the process. Because of these central themes, each film can stand on its own, even though their plots are eerily similar.
