WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Free Guy, now playing in theaters.

In Free Guy, many altruistic figures pop up as Ryan Reynolds' Guy tries to save his digital realm from being terminated. He's aiming to help Millie (Jodie Comer) get back her source code and prove Soonami Studios stole from her, while other characters such as Keys and Mouser put aside their careers as game developers to bring the evil empire down. However, the movie's biggest and most selfless hero is actually Guy's in-game bestie, Buddy.

Played by Lil' Rel Howery, Buddy cuts a comedic figure throughout Free Guy, accepting his role in Free City as a non-playable character or NPC. The bank security guard doesn't know their lives are meaningless as background characters in the game, so he urges Guy to stick with the status quo and not buck their routine because he just loves a comfort zone.

That changes when Guy becomes sentient due to coding that Keys laid down years earlier when the programmer fell for Millie. Guy later realizes NPCs in the game can evolve and are meant for more. It's why he falls in love with Millie's Molotov Girl, only to be rocked on his mission to help her get evidence. After realizing that Guy is an AI that can help her on her mission, Millie must break the news to him that his life is fake.

Guy is broken by this revelation and goes to Buddy to lament, only to gain the clarity he needs. Buddy, who's usually a coward, stuns Guy by admitting it doesn't matter if they live in the real world or a video game because moments like this when they're bonding make them real. Once they help the people they love, that's all that matters. This conversation sparks Guy back into action and encourages him to educate all the characters. He forms a union of NPCs, buoyed by Buddy's words, and this leads to a rousing finale where Guy's able to steal the intel needed for Millie.

Thus, Buddy's the one who helps Guy motivate everyone to be comfortable in their own skin and accept this place as their home. He doesn't even need to use the player sunglasses that'd allow him access to weapons and money -- he's happy with who he is and that's enough for him. When Buddy sacrifices himself to aid Guy with the code theft, he isn't even sad because he got to help his best friend achieve greatness.

At the end of Free Guy, Guy lets Millie go to be reunited with Keys in the real world. While it's a bittersweet moment for him, the blow is softened when he reunites with Buddy in the new game. Buddy's his guiding light and brother-in-arms, and Guy can't wait to kick it with his best friend again.

To see Buddy make a difference in Guy's mission, watch Free Guy in theaters now.
