While highlighting the tonal similarities between his latest theatrical release Freaky and his 2017 film Happy Death Day, director Christopher Landon entertained the possibility of both movies inhabiting the same cinematic world.

"I think that they exist in the same spiritual universe, so to speak," Landon explained during an interview with Collider. "I think I could easily see [both movies' lead characters] Tree and Millie getting together and being like, 'Well, you won't believe what happened to me!' Because I think that tonally they're connected, I think thematically they're connected in a weird way. And yeah, I think it's an easy buy for sure."

Furthermore, when the idea of a crossover between Freaky and Happy Death Day was brought up, Landon neither confirmed nor denied the possibility, saying, "Well, you never know! You never know!"

Happy Death Day follows egocentric college student Tree Gelbman as she suddenly finds herself reliving her birthday on an infinite time loop that ends with her death by a masked murderer each time. She must figure out who her mysterious killer is in order to finally close the loop. The film's success spawned the 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U.

Freaky, meanwhile, sees high school student Millie Kessler becoming a victim to an infamous serial killer called the Butcher. However, thanks to the involvement of a mystical dagger, Millie and the Butcher switch bodies, and the timid 17-year-old soon discovers she has only 24 hours to reclaim her identity before she becomes stuck in a middle-aged body for the rest of her life.

Directed by Christopher Landon, Freaky stars Vince Vaughn, Kathryn Newton, Celeste O'Connor, Misha Oshervich, Uriah Shelton, Alan Ruck, Katie Finneran and Dana Drori. The film is now in theaters, and it arrives on VOD Nov. 30.
