The popular anime streaming platform Crunchyroll announced an ambitious slate of original programming, with several titles produced through Crunchyroll Studios.

Among the titles announced for release later this year is an anime adaptation of FreakAngels, based on the comic book of the same name by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield. An ominous clip from the adaptation can be seen in Crunchyroll's original programming trailer, starting at the 52-second mark.

Launched as a webcomic by Ellis and Duffield in 2008, the story of FreakAngels follows a dozen young psychics living in the ruins of the United Kingdom following a devastating cataclysmic event, blending tropes from the post-apocalyptic, superhero and steampunk genres. The series ran until 2015, with print collections published by Avatar Press.

While the level of Ellis' involvement with the anime adaptation is currently unknown, the award-winning writer has previously written and executive produced in the medium, serving as the series writer and executive producer for Netflix's Castlevania anime adaptation, which is soon debuting its third season.
