Crossbones actor Frank Grillo has pulled back on recent statements where he hinted at the character's return despite having been killed by Scarlet Witch in Captain America: Civil War. Grillo previously teased news he called "interesting" and which had him "excited" about a potential return for the villain, but he's now walking back on those comments, saying they were blown out of proportion.

"Look, Marvel’s awesome. I have a long-term contract with them and it's a superhero movie, you never know," Grillo said in an interview with SYFY at the recently-concluded New York Comic Con. "I don’t have any idea. I said that once before about two weeks ago and people jumped on that and thought I said Crossbones is back. No. That’s ridiculous. But we’ll see what happens. I’m not waiting for the phone to ring."
Grillo's character appeared to have been blown up while battling the Avengers in Civil War's opening act, which ironically pushed the Sokovia Accords and the superhero registration act into motion and led to the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America. While it remains to be seen what film Crossbones could potentially return in, and just how he could come back from the dead, anything is possible in the next two Avengers films, due to the Infinity Stones which can alter reality and potentially even negate death.
