Mere days after he seemingly confirmed the return of the villain Crossbones in Avengers 4, Frank Grillo now says this isn't the case -- or, rather, he's not saying anything at all. Grillo, who played Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, now says that he has confirmed nothing about the villain's return.

The actor revealed his newly changed stance on Instagram, where he uploaded an image that reads "Actor Frank Grillo confirms that his character, Crossbones, will make an appearance in a flashback in Avengers 4," along with a caption that denies the statement.

The caption reads: "#fakenews. In the course of a day i get asked 1000 questions about a character i played for 8 minutes. I’ve confirmed nothing. But sometimes i have fun w people who ask. #moveon"

This is quite different from Grillo's recent statement on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, during which he was explicit about Crossbones' return via flashback in Avengers 4. "He makes an appearance in the next Avengers movie," said Grillo at the time, "but it’s a flashback." Now, though, it sounds like Grillo it chalking that statement up to having a little fun with the podcast's hosts.

Oddly enough, Grillo isn't the only Grillo to let slip details about deceased Marvel Cinematic Universe characters potentially making a comeback in the upcoming film. Executive producer Michael Grillo also seemingly revealed that Tilda Swinton's Ancient One will appear in the film, if only for a very brief time, late last week.

Marvel Studios is notorious for going to great lengths to keep details about its marquee films from leaking to the public, going so far as to have actors perform scenes that were never meant to appear on-screen and only handing out select portions of the script before filming. So, even if scenes featuring Crossbones were shot, it's totally possible they may never make it into the final product. The only way to be sure, of course, will be to watch the mysterious film when it hits theaters next year.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers 4 stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Evangeline Lilly and Josh Brolin. The film arrives May 3, 2019.
