Frank Cho Brings "Savage Wolverine" To Marvel NOW!

Last week, Marvel released a new set of teasers for the third round of Marvel NOW! titles slated to debut in January 2013, including a title written and drawn by Frank Cho teased only by the word "Savage" marked with three slash marks. Cho's title was revealed today by Marvel.com as "Savage Wolverine," which features a team-up between Wolverine and Shanna the She-Devil.

The series premise spun out from an Indiana Jones/Cthulhu story that Cho had been developing. The creator modified it into a Wolverine team-up story with Shanna playing the Marion Ravenwood to Logan's Indy. Shanna is a natural fit for Cho following his well-received "Shanna the She-Devil" miniseries in 2004.

"The story is not just a quest to get home; it's a story about surviving each other's company and the Savage Land," Cho told Marvel.com "I didn't deviate too far from my original take of Shanna from nine years ago. Shanna is still abrasive, scrappy and confident. She knows how to take care of herself. Since Indiana Jones was my main inspiration for this story, I naturally envisioned Shanna as Marion Ravenwood to Wolverine's Indiana Jones."

Cho characterized the series as an excellent starting point for new readers and would include a number of new elements for the Marvel U.

"You really don't need to know too much back history of the character to follow and enjoy this story," he said. "I'm going to introduce brand new characters who may be very important down the road."

"Savage Wolverine" #1 by Frank Cho hits in January.
