Fox's "Gotham" Casts Its Mr. Freeze

"House of Cards" veteran Nathan Darrow has been cast as Victor Fries, aka Mr. Freeze, on Fox's "Gotham."

TV Line reports he'll be introduced in a two-part storyline in episodes 12 and 13, set to air -- appropriately enough -- in December.

"Gotham" describes the "ferociously smart and eminent capable" Fries as one of the city's preeminent cryogenics engineers whose beloved wife Nora has fallen ill with a terminal disease. As her condition worsens, he struggles to find a way to freeze her before she dies: "This harrowing journey leads to his transformation into the legendary DC villain, Mr. Freeze."

It's a path that will be familiar to fans of DC Comics, where the villain has been menacing Batman since 1959. Originally called Mr. Zero, the character was renamed Mr. Freeze for the 1966 "Batman" television series, where he was popularized. His introduction in 1992 on "Batman: The Animated Series" solidified Fries as a tragic figure driven to save his terminally ill wife.

Darrow plays Secret Service agent Edward Meechum on "House of Cards."

"Gotham" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
