Fall has arrived, and with it the start of a new television season. This year, amid a large batch of promising new series, one in particular stands out from the pack: Fox's The Gifted. You've seen the trailers and television spots, the ads and billboards. You've seen the "X" logo, and you've heard mentions of the X-Men and their mysterious disappearance. But while the show does deal with the popular team of mutant in some capacity, they're not the stars of the series.

In short, don't go into The Gifted expecting to see Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler. Fox's first broadcast X-Men series moves away from the core members of the X-Men and features lesser known mutants as we follow a family of four become on the run from the government after the children start exhibiting super-powers. While the X-Men do -- or did -- exist in the universe of the show, the've disappeared, leaving behind a bit of a power vacuum and a darker reality. However, while the series features Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker as Reed and Caitlin Strucker -- regular, human parents forced to do the unthinkable to protect their children -- is will count among its cast several mutants from the comic books.

Considering they're not the most commonly known Marvel mutants out there, however, we've run down every super-powered character we know is in the series so far. So sit back and enjoy your first (or seventeenth) pumpkin spice latte as we tell you all you need to know about The Gifted's mutants.

Blink just might be the most high-profile character on the show, simply because she had a small but notable role in the 2014 movie X-Men: Days of Future Past. Although she was played by Fan Bingbing in the film, this time around Jamie Chung will strap on the character's boots, and recognizable right-eye tattoo.

The Gifted X-Men Blink

Ever since her first appearance in the 1994 Phalanx Covenant crossover event, Blink has had a distinct fan-following, one that grew somewhat during her stint as a member of the dimension-traveling mutant team, the Exiles. Also known by her human name Clarice Ferguson/Clarice Fong, Blink has the power to create teleportation warps, which she can use both offensively and defensively. Not only can she use this power to teleport herself and her friends, she can also concentrate that energy to create spikes that she can then throw at her enemies.

Polaris

It might not be immediately apparent to those unfamiliar with the X-Men outside of the movies, but Lorna Dane, aka Polaris, is actually a very important X-character, due largely to her lineage. While she might often be overshadowed by siblings Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, Polaris is also a daughter of Magneto.

Polaris-The-Gifted

Although she does not have the same mother as the Avengers twins, Lorna did inherit something the two did not: Her father's magnetic power. While she doesn't have his experience, she is just as powerful, possibly even more so. It's those powers that have given her her trademark green hair. On the series, the character will be portrayed by Emma Dumont. Showrunner Matt Nix has even recently confirmed that the character's link to Magneto might be explore further down the line.

Thunderbird

John Proudstar is a character with both a strong body and mind. A Native American of Apache descent, he's quite proud of his heritage, though his life lacked direction. Hoping to figure out his role in the world, Proudstar joined the army in the hopes of giving his life meaning. When he started exhibiting super-strength, Professor Xavier came knocking.

The Gifted X-Men Thunderbird

Taking on the identity of Thunderbird, John would come to join the X-Men, years before his younger brother James Proudstar, aka Warpath – whom we saw in a small capacity in X-Men: Days of Future Past – would join Wolverine's X-Force team. The character will be portrayed by Blair Redford, but it remains to be seen if mentions of his younger brother will be made, or if this Thunderbird will meet a similar fate (death) as his comic book counterpart.

The Strucker Children

The Strucker children may have undergone the biggest changes when it comes to the transition from page to screen. While the show's Struckers are new mutants, on the run with their parents, in the comic books, Andreas and Andrea Strucker are the villainous children of Baron von Strucker. Thanks to their father's machinations, the pair's genes were scientifically engineered to develop superpowers which included flight and plasma energy attacks – powers they can manifest as long as they hold hands.

The-Gifted-Strucker-Twins

Now, considering that von Strucker had a small role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, his character rights are obviously held by Marvel Studios. As mutants, however, his children can apparently be used by Fox, although their lineage had to be changed. For The Gifted, they are now named Lauren and Andy, played respectively by Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes, and they are the children of Reed and Caitlin Strucker. Known in the comics as the Fenris Twins, the pair are white supremacist villains who have it out for the X-Men. In The Gifted, we'll meet a very different version; here, they appear to be the central protagonists, may not even be twins, and their power set could prove to be rather different.

Ahab

Accompanied by his mutant-hunting Hounds, Ahab is a Marvel villain that hails from a dark future. Considering that The Gifted takes place in a timeline where the X-Men have now disappeared, it's entirely possible that we could witness the rise to power of Ahab. Played by Garret Dillahunt, the character may well rise to power as the government hunts down mutants.

Garret-Dillahunt-Ahab

In the comic books, Ahab has the power to create harpoons of pure energy that he can use as weapons. He also, at one point, turned into a half-man, half-cyborg monster. While this will not be how Ahab will look like according to series creator Matt Nix, it's entirely possible the character will eventually take on some characteristics of his Marvel Comics inspiration.

Shatter

Not only is Marvel Comics' character Shatter's body covered in a special substance that causes him to be virtually unbreakable, he also has an enhanced healing factor, as well as the mutant ability to turn all types of liquids into crystals. And if all that weren't enough, he efficiently uses a baseball bat as an offensive weapon.

The-Gifted-X-Men-Shatter

In the comics, Shatter is closely associated with the Morlocks, a group of mutants living in seclusion in the tunnels and sewers underneath New York City. With The Gifted seeing the Struckers joining an underground movement of mutants, this could very well be where Shatter, as played by Jermaine Rivers, will come into play.

Sage

While we have yet to see any actual footage of the character in action, we do know that the mutant Sage, who also goes by the name Tessa, has a role to play in the series. In the comics, Tessa was actually one of the first mutants discovered by Professor X, one he sent undercover in the Hellfire Club to keep watch on its leader. She would later become a member of the Exiles and the X-Treme X-Men team.

The Gifted X-Men Sage

Played by Hayley Lovitt, little is known about how Sage will be introduced in the series. However, if her abilities make the transition to television unchanged, they could prove useful. In the comics, she has a powerful computer-like mind, able to see and activate the genetic code of a mutant. This power is enhanced by a limited form of telepathy.

Dreamer

Another member of the Morlocks will appear on The Gifted in the form of Dreamer, or Beautiful Dreamer, as she's known in the comics. Her power is much more different than the typical mutant's, in that she is able to insert false memories into people via a special smoke. You can see how this would come in handy when one is on the run from the government.

Beautiful-Dreamer-Marvel-The-Gifted

The character, who originally appeared in Marvel's Power Pack series in 1985, will be played by Elena Satine. It remains to be seen if she will appear as a friend of fellow Morlock, Shatter, or in opposition to the Underground.

Eclipse

The Gifted will see the introduction of an original mutant, one created just for this series. Played by Sean Teale, Marcos Diaz goes by the codename Eclipse. Since he can't be compared to a comic book counterpart, we only have what Fox has teased to go by, which is that he has the power to turn light itself into a weapon by manipulating photons.

eclipse in the gifted

Seemingly a member of the mutant underground, Eclipse will no doubt prove himself a valuable and powerful ally as the Struckers fight to protect their children from those who would do them harm.

Ten mutants, one show... And this is only the beginning. With a total of ten episodes for its first season, there's no telling how many more mutants may appear on the series. But even with the bigger X-Men members out of the equation, the door is open for a multitude of lesser-known characters to finally make the jump to live-action, characters that are fan-favorites all their own.

The Gifted premieres October 2 on FOX.
