Fox Releases First Official Photo of Hugh Jackman From "The Wolverine"

Courtesy of the film's Twitter account arrives the first official photo of Hugh Jackman from "The Wolverine," Fox's eagerly anticipated -- and somewhat delayed -- follow-up to 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Directed by James Mangold ("3:10 to Yuma," "Walk the Line"), the film is based in part on the 1982 miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, and finds Logan as an outsider in Japan, where he must battle ninjas, Silver Samurai and the politics of the Tokyo criminal underworld for the heart of his ex-lover Mariko Yashida, daughter of a Japanese crime lord.

Jackman has emphasized "The Wolverine" won't have any direct links to its predecessor which, while commercially successful, was widely panned by critics and comic fans alike. "We've deliberately not called it 'Wolverine 2' because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture," he said last month. "With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it's going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic."

Jackman is joined by a cast that includes Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima, Yun Lee, Brian Tee and Naoya Ogawa. "The Wolverine" opens July 26, 2013.
