FOX is moving ahead with a pilot based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel, "The Exorcist," which was adapted into the critically-acclaimed film of the same name by William Friedkin in 1973.

According to Variety, the pilot is a bit of a twist on Blatty's original book, being described as "a modern...propulsive, serialized psychological thriller following two very different men tackling one family’s case of horrifying demonic possession, and confronting the face of true evil."

The pilot was written by Jeremy Slater -- who is also serving as executive producer -- alongside "True Romance" producer James Robinson, David Robinson and Barbara Wall of Morgan Creek Productions.

The one-hour "Exorcist" drama pilot is expected to be produced later this year.
