Fox May Be Heading To Mars With The Martian Chronicles

John Davis, the producer behind Fox’s science-fiction hits I, Robot and AVP: Alien vs. Predator, has optioned the film rights to Ray Bradbury’s classic short-story collection The Martian Chronicles, 24 Frames reports.

Published in 1950, the 28-story collection chronicles the colonization of Mars by humans fleeing a troubled Earth that’s eventually devastated by nuclear war, and the conflict between the native Martians and the new colonists.

The Martian Chronicles was previously adapted in 1980 as a three-episode television miniseries starring Rock Hudson, Darren McGavin, Bernadette Peters, Roddy McDowall, Barry Morse and Maria Schell. (I don’t think you can get any more ’80s than that cast.)

Earlier today, we reported that Fox is a lead contender for Will Dunn’s script for Ion, a sci-fi romantic epic. So if it seems as if the studio is trying to glom onto anything that bears even a passing resemblance to Avatar, well, that’s probably because it is.
