Who says 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios can't work well together? The two film juggernauts came to an agreement to allow Fox to change Negasonic Teenage Warhead's powers in the smash-hit "Deadpool," an in exchange, Marvel Studios gained the rights to Ego the Living Planet in the upcoming cosmic adventure "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2."
"Deadpool" screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed how the deal was made during a special screening and Q&A session at Fox Studios over the weekend, according to a report on The Playlist. Not wanting to populate Deadpool's cast with X-Men characters, Wernick explained "we were looking down the list of the 400 [‘X-Men’] characters that Fox owns, and [Negasonic Teenage Warhead] jumped out and we were like, 'yes.' I don’t care what her powers are. She’s gonna be in the movie."
In exchange for being given permission to change her mutant powers from telepathy to explosive abilities, Marvel Studios gained an entire planet -- Ego the Living Planet. "Kurt Russell[‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new ‘Guardians’ movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers," Wernick explained.
"Deadpool" is in stores now on Blu-ray, starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Tim Miller.
Opening May 5, 2017, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell.
