Fox is moving forward with Hawkmaster, an animated fantasy drama series developed by Pixar veterans Mark Andrews and Andrew Gordon.

The network has closed a script deal for Hawkmaster from Andrews, Gordon and Israeli producer Oded Turgeman, reported Deadline. An original project, Hawkmaster "is set in a fantasy world, where Knights ride giant Birds of Prey, and Kess, a young woman who has always dreamed of flying, encounters a mysterious Hawk without its rider and soon finds herself caught up in a dangerous plot to kill the Queen. With the help of the Four Winds, renegade Knights banished from the kingdom, Kess will discover what it means to be a Knight and trust your winged companion with your life."

Andrews won an Oscar for co-directing Pixar's 2012 animated fantasy adventure Brave and received an Academy Award nomination for co-helming the studio's 2005 animated short One Man Band. He also served as a storyboard artist and staff writer on Genndy Tartakovsky's animated show Samurai Jack, as well as a storyboard artist on Tartakovsky's 2D animated Clone Wars micro-series. On the live-action side of things, Andrews was a storyboard artist on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) and co-wrote Disney's 2012 box office flop John Carter.

Gordon will executive produce Hawkmaster, with Andrews acting as both a writer and executive producer. The former worked at Pixar for twenty years, serving as an animator on A Bug's Life (1998), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Ratatouille (2007), and Brave, among numerous other animated feature films. Most recently, Gordon was the head of character animation on Ron's Gone Wrong, an animated sci-fi comedy that 20th Century Studios is releasing this month.

Hawkmaster is part of Fox's initiative to expand its animated programming, which includes developing more animated series intended for older viewers. The network is also working on a NIMH animated series based on the books that inspired Don Bluth's 1982 animated classic film The Secret of NIMH and Dan Harmon's mythological comedy series Krapopolis, which is the first animated show curated on the blockchain. “We love our family shows, they’re iconic, but we’re looking to go beyond family and start to explore things that are more dramatic," said Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn.

Fox has yet to announce a premiere date for Hawkmaster.
