Fox 2000, a division of 20th Century Fox, has beaten out Dreamworks and other major studios to snap up the rights to an unpublished novel and its two unwritten sequels by writer Julianna Baggott, in the hopes that they’ll turn out to be the next big genre thing. Are you ready to get Pure?
Pure – the first of Baggott’s trilogy – introduces a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has become segregated into an underclass “scarred” by the event that changed everything, and the eponymous “pure,” who live separate from everyone else, untouched by everything that’s happened. Plot details about the trilogy haven’t been released, but I think everyone who’s ever read any story or seen any movie can guess that both sides will come into some kind of conflict at some point, and there’ll probably be some Romeo and Juliet-esque tragic relationship across the divide, as well.
The movie deal, which apparently went to a high six-figure sum, surprisingly came before the book has had a chance to find a publisher – the book rights go for auction next week – because Baggott’s manager passed manuscripts around movie producers in the hope of luring a purchase. Fox 2000’s winning bid covers not only Pure, but both sequels as well, so expect the high-profile franchise treatment for this one, when it happens.
