Fans wondering when the Fox drama Gotham would return need wonder no longer.

Fox has announced that the fifth and final season of the Batman-related series will return on Jan. 3, 2019. The midseason timing of the premiere is atypical of the series' historic fall season debut. Season 5 will also expand from the original order of 10 episodes to 12, giving  young Bruce Wayne a little more time to embrace his future as the Dark Knight.

The new season will introduce Shane West as the villain Bane into Gotham continuity. The end of last season saw the apparent demise of other characters -- previous regulars on the show -- as well as the city being cut off from the outside world thanks to Jeremiah and Ra's al Ghul. These events evoke DC's 1999 storyline "No Man's Land," where Gotham was abandoned by the U.S. government in the aftermath of a severe earthquake.

Gotham will air Thursday nights on Fox, and stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean, and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
