Add four more series regulars to Fox's "Gotham" cast: Warner Bros. has confirmed Robin Lord Taylor as The Penguin, a href="https://www.comicbookresources.com/tag/zabryna+guevara">Zabryna Guevara as Captain Essen, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Erin Richards as Barbara Kean. This follows Saturday's announcement that Ben McKenzie has been cast in the series lead role of Detective James Gordon.

WB has released character descriptions for each of the four cast additions.

Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin: "With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath (for gangster Fish Mooney) who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor."

Captain Essen: "Gordon's boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad, Captain Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that's as much corporate litigator as cop."

Alfred Pennyworth: "A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he's fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne."

Barbara Kean: "A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancee of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband...which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham."

All four characters have their roots in DC Comics: Penguin and Alfred are obviously major parts of the Batman mythos, and Captain Essen is based on Sarah Essen, a Gotham police officer created by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in "Batman: Year One," who later married Gordon in pre-New 52 continuity. Barbara Kean is traditionally depicted as Gordon's first wife.

Taylor has experience in comic book-based TV, appearing last fall in "Walking Dead" episode "Indifference" as Sam. Guevara's past roles include Ayn on "Burn Notice," and Melania Ortiz on "3 lbs." Pertwee, the second actor to be cast as Alfred in the past two weeks following Jeremy Irons taking on the big-screen role in the "Man of Steel" sequel, is a veteran of TV and movies with appearances including "Law & Order: UK" and "Luther" (he's also the son of actor Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor on "Doctor Who). Richards has recently been seen in "Merlin" and "Breaking In."

Slated to depict the pre-Commissioner days of James Gordon and Bruce Wayne's pre-Batman early years, "Gotham," one of multiple DC Comics-based properties in current development as a television show, has a series commitment from Fox.
