A deal reportedly signed between Epic Games and Paramount means characters such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may soon be playable in Fortnite.

In a recent episode of the XboxEra Podcast, co-host Nick Baker introduced the rumor, stating, "apparently Paramount has signed a deal with Epic to bring properties to Fortnite." Baker explains that the characters he expects to appear as a result of the deal are the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While he doesn't reveal his source, several Fortnite rumors discussed on the show have turned out to be true. The heroes in a half-shell are no strangers to appearing in video game franchises, evidenced by their debut in the popular multiplayer game Smite.

While Baker focuses mainly on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he also explains that a deal with Paramount could give Epic Games access to a vast range of properties. If the agreement exists, it may mean characters from IPs as varied as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Spongebob Squarepants and Star Trek could eventually make their way to Fortnite. The Paramount rumor comes only a couple of weeks after Baker stated that Epic Games has also signed a deal with Microsoft, meaning characters from a number of Bethesda franchises, including the Doom Slayer, may also appear in the monolithic battle royale.

Released in 2017, Fortnite is now one of the most successful free-to-play shooters of all time. Its most popular game mode is Battle Royale, in which up to 100 players compete against each other to be the last one standing. Developer Epic Games consistently reinvents the game with ongoing content patches; the recent Chapter 3 update brought considerable changes to Fortnite, flipping the game's map and ongoing story on its head. It also provides players with new items to shake up competitive matches and facilitate unique strategies and playstyles.

One of Fortnite's most notable features is its ever-expanding roster of character skins. Chapter 3 introduced Spider-Man as a playable hero and a skin depicting Tom Holland's portrayal of the character -- as well as Zendaya's MJ -- was later added to celebrate the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Easter eggs found in the game suggest that the Green Goblin may also be on his way. Fortnite doesn't only feature Marvel heroes, though. If the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles join the game, they'll sit alongside characters like Alien's Xenomorph, Ariana Grande, Lebron James and Naruto.

Fortnite is available on nearly every modern gaming platform, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and mobile devices.
