Fortnite's "The Devourer of Worlds" event saw eager players of the free-to-play cross-platform game take on Marvel's Galactus after weeks of buildup in which the cosmic entity endanger the fabric of Fortnite's in-game reality. The event itself, held on Dec. 1., has since surpassed a milestone for Epic Games, with a record 15.3 million players coming together to fight back against the threat of Galactus as 3.4 million fans watched on.
Epic Games tweeted its celebration of the accomplishment, writing, "We defeated him! A record 15.3 million concurrent players joined forces in our biggest event ever to fight back Galactus in today's in-game event, while more than 3.4 million cheered and watched on [YouTube] and [Twitch]!"
The countdown for the event first appeared on Nov. 21 on the Battle Pass Challenge Table, the main lobby and the helicarrier that acted as Spawn Island for players. To increase the forebodingness of the challenge, Galactus began to slowly approach the island in the sky. He eventually disappeared, only to reappear in the distance, closer to the island than ever before.
While that was taking place, a Galactus hologram was present on the game's Battle Pass screen, becoming more and more visible with each passing day, signaling the impending arrival of Galactus. Tying into the event, many official social media accounts for Marvel characters such as Thor and Iron Man participated in the advertising of "The Devourer of Worlds Event," replying to posts regarding Galactus in an effort to further hype already excited Marvel and Fortnite fans.
Never content to sit on its laurels, however, Epic Games has already teased the arrival of several other playable crossover characters, including The Mandalorian's titular Din Djarin and Grogu, as well as Sony's favorite dad, God of War's Kratos.
Developed by Epic Games, Fortnite is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
