Fortnite developer Epic Games recently filed a lawsuit against Apple following its removal from the App Store. Apple cited payment policy violations as reasons behind the game's removal. Fortnite has now been removed from the Google Play Store on Android devices.
Google released a statement concerning the matter explaining that current policies are in place in order to allow the app to be distributed through different app stores, "For game developers who choose to use the Play Store, we have consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users." The statement continued, "While Fortnite remains available on Android, we can no longer make it available on Play because it violates our policies." However, Google added that it was open to discussing the issue with Epic Games in order to bring Fornite back to the Google Play Store.
Epic Games' online video game was removed from the Apple App Store due to its implementation of an in-app payment system, allowing the game to avoid Apple's 30 percent fee. Epic employed similar features to avoid paying fees to Google.
The game was briefly removed from the Google Play Store in 2018 for Epic Games' attempt to bypass the 30 percent fee. The developer opted instead to allow users to download Fortnite directly from the game's website, though it eventually complied with Google's policy and was restored on the Play Store.
