The Avengers truly have boasted the membership of some of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, defending the Marvel Universe with a rotating roster of superheroes across over fifty years of comic book history. However several prominent members of the team had the memories of their past superhero service wiped from the minds of their teammates before eventually being welcomed back into the fold.

Here are three different heroes whose past histories as a part of the Marvel superhero community were erased, how the respective lapses took place and how the truth behind their history was eventually revealed and restored.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones Flying

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos in 2001's Alias #1, Jessica Jones was a high school classmate of Peter Parker whose parents were killed when their family accidentally struck a military convoy carrying radioactive materials. The tragedy gave Jessica superpowers and she develops a superhero persona after being inspired by watching the Marvel heroes in action.

After being mind-controlled for eight months by the villainous Purple Man, Jessica sought out psychic therapy from Jean Grey. While memories of Jessica's involvement were never erased from the heroes' minds per se, her trauma led to many of her associates and friends respecting her retirement. Jessica eventually reclaimed her superhero destiny and joined the New Avengers after marrying her longtime paramour Luke Cage.

The Sentry

A middle-aged, overweight, unassuming man named Bob Reynolds discovered he was once a mighty superhero known as the Sentry, created by Paul Jenkins, Jae Lee and Rick Veitch in 2000's The Sentry #1, with Bob's memories of his past life heralding the arrival of his arch-nemesis the Void. As Bob visited major members of the Marvel superhero community, their memories of him were similarly restored, including the Hulk recalling the Sentry's calming influence on his personality and Spider-Man winning a Pulitzer Prize from taking a photograph of the hero in action.

Eventually, the truth behind the wind wipe was revealed: The Sentry and Void were two halves of the same individual and as long as the public was aware of one, the other would continue to exist and gradually gain power. Working with Mister Fantastic and Doctor Strange, Bob erased everyone's memories of the Sentry and the Void, though this erasure would not last and he would continue to wrestle with his duality with devastating consequences.

Voyager

The epic Avengers storyline "No Surrender" introduced Voyager, the daughter of the omnipotent cosmic character the Grandmaster. Created by Mark Waid, Al Ewing, Jim Zub, Mike Allred and Laura Allred in 2018's Marvel Legacy #1, Voyager was used by the Grandmaster to help him outwit the Challenger in their contest of champions involving Earth's Mightiest Heroes. To help with the conceit, Voyager implanted false memories that she was a founding member of the Avengers named Valerie Vector, who was lost in an early battle against the Squadron Sinister.

Inspired by the heroes' example, Voyager would go on to truly become a superhero, even after her ruse was exposed by Edwin Jarvis and Vision. After helping the Avengers take down the Challenger, Voyager resurfaced during the follow-up storyline "No Road Home" to help the heroes again after the pantheon of gods was targeted by the evil Nyx, using her time-travel abilities to help the Avengers take on the Goddess of Darkness.
